Pamela Raj, 57, was found lying on the floor of a superette in the East Dockside housing projects district. Her husband Sanjiv Raj, 59, was barely recognizable, his body burnt beyond recognition. Forensics had to peel his melted corpse off his wife’s dead back. It looked as though he had tried to protect his spouse in his last moments from the ravages of fire, by draping himself across her unconscious form.

Both lived in a unit above the store and had no criminal priors or known enemies. Both had been badly beaten and their hands bound before being burnt alive. Witnesses reported a suspicious looking man in the area before the killings who was wearing sunglasses at night and what was obviously a wig or toupee. Various descriptions provided enough details for a police artist to make a sketch, which was published in various newspapers and posters fixed to lampposts and bus stops. Despite the efforts of precinct police and the media, no one has come forward to identify the mysterious man in the sketch. A similar attack occurred three months ago but police have yet to confirm whether they are related or not.
